Auto Insurance Rates-How to Lower your Premiums

The rising cost of gasoline and other expenses have resulted in many people looking for ways in which they can lower their auto insurance rates. The good news is that there are several steps which you can take in order to reduce your rates and save on your auto insurance premiums.

One of the first tactics you might wish to consider using in order to lower your auto insurance rates is to raise your deductible. A higher deductible will generally automatically lower your rate to some degree. Keep in mind; however, that your deductible is the amount of money that you must pay up front before your insurance will take over and begin providing coverage. This means that if you have a $1,000 deductible, you will need to come up with $1,000 before your insurance company can begin to provide any coverage. That said; however, you can lower your premium by as much as 20% by raising your deductible.

Since your driving record plays a strong role in determining your auto insurance rates, it is important to keep your driving record clean in order to qualify for lower rates. Avoid speeding around Philadelphia and always make sure you are wearing your seat belt.

Consider combining your auto insurance policy with your homeowners policy. Many insurance companies will offer discounts if you have both types of coverage with them. Along the same lines, consider insuring all of your family cars under one policy. If you have teenagers or college aged children, this can be a good way to offset the naturally higher costs of insuring drivers in that expensive age bracket.

Ask your carrier about discounts they may provide for certain features on your cars. Some carriers will provide discounts for features such as anti-lock brakes, automatic seatbelts, an alarm system and more.

Consider taking a driver's education or safety course. While many people take this type of course in order to keep a traffic violation off their record in Philadelphia, you can also take a driving safety course once per year to refresh your memory and possibly even save money on your insurance rates. Be sure to check with your insurance agent about possible discounts and when the next class may be held in your local Philadelphia area.

Finally, if you insure high school or college students, do not overlook the fact that you may be able to receive a discount for their good grades. Some insurance companies are now providing discounts for students who make the dean's list, rank in the top 20% of their class or maintain a ‘B' average.
